Nerf gun describes a family of colorful toy guns by Hasbro which launch harmless projectiles. Usually these projectiles are foam darts with plastic tips, but new projectiles have also been developed in the shape of foam spheres. Over the years, Nerf weapons (and clones by Buzz Bee, Air Zone or Dart Zone) have been sold and enjoyed worldwide, and have taken many forms (e.g. similar to revolvers, pistols, rifles, machine guns) and load in manners similar to many real-life firearms: revolver cylinders, autoloading magazines, breech, muzzle, and ammunition belt.
Among Nerf enthusiasts, the word "gun" is often replaced with "blaster," so as to avoid confusion with firearms and association with injury or death. Also, the muzzles in particular of many Nerf blasters are painted or molded in orange to indicate a priority on safety. The official Nerf brand also produces licensed toys based on weapons from popular franchises including Halo, Star Wars, Overwatch, Fortnite, and Marvel.
