Iconic American film studio founded in 1924 by the merger of three separate studios (Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures) under one umbrella. Also known by the initials "MGM."
The studio's famous and often-parodied logo is a roaring lion in a circle formed by strips of film, with the Latin legend Ars Gratia Artis ("Art for Art's Sake," MGM's motto) on top and a stylized theatre mask below.
