A linea nigra (Latin for "black line"), is an area of hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin) that runs down the abdomen in the form of a thin line, seen during pregnancy. It occurs due to increased levels of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, which is also responsible for the darkening of nipples in pregnant women.
