The Lavochkin La-5 is a Soviet World War II fighter aircraft. It was a development of the earlier Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov LaGG-3, replacing its predecessor's underpowered V-12 engine with a much more powerful radial engine. This change made it one of the USSR's most capable fighter aircraft of World War II. Toward the end of the war, it was further refined into the La-7.
