国後 国後(艦隊これ) 国後(艦隊これくしょん) 国後(艦これ)
Second of the four Shimushu-class Coastal Defense Ships as depicted in Kantai Collection.
Kunashiri has messy, two-tone pink hair with brown tips on the two side up tails, and bangs that can come down to between the eyes. She has orange eyes in the tsurime style. Like her elder sister-ship, her outfit consists of a variant of a green serafuku with a red neck ribbon, a jacket with long fur-trimmed sleeves, a pleated green skirt, white pantyhose, and black mary janes.
Her rigging involves hip-mounted hull-like platforms, with single-cannon turrets on her sides with adjacent anti-air guns, and a mast and smokestack to her back. On her ankles, she has depth charge launchers.
As a coastal defense ship, her class is even smaller than destroyers, and as such, she is portrayed as an "elementary school student" character, even younger than the generally "middle school" appearances of the destroyers. Kunashiri has a distinctly tsundere personality, with official lines that betray she is extremely conscientious of how she is seen by other shipgirls like Kamikaze, if not outright defensive. Her official lines portray relationships with both her sister ships Shimushu and Hachijou, as well as Nenohi and Kamikaze due to the real-life ship's history.
She is voiced by Sasaki Hitomi.
The historical IJN Kunashiri was commissioned on October 3rd, 1940, and served the entire length of the Pacific war.
When newly constructed, Kunashiri served as a diplomatic escort for the envoy to Russia, meaning she had a chrysanthemum seal and full Commander as captain. When the Nenohi came into the same port, the Nenohi radioed to ask why their ship, normally higher-ranking, was not saluted, they found they (captained by a Lt. Commander) were actually outranked by the seemingly lower-ranked ship, and the Nenohi's captain swiftly went to apologize. (Kunashiri has a line about the importance of greetings because of this.)
Designed as an escort vessel without the speed or weaponry to fight on the front lines, Kunashiri spent a majority of her time in the vicinity of Hokkaido and the Kuril islands escorting transport convoys. Notable incidents were that she participated in the evacuation of Kiska Island, as well as an incident on July 28th, 1944 where she reported being damaged mysteriously. (She was actually hit by the USS Tambor.)
After the war concluded, she was used as a repatriation vessel, but on the 4th of June, 1946, she ran aground. Efforts to save her wound up sinking the Kamikaze, as well. (The Kantai Collection Kunashiri has several lines relating to Kamikaze because of this event.)
She is named after Kunashir Island (Kunashiri in Japanese), the southernmost of the Kuril Islands between Hokkaido and Kamchatka and one of four in territorial dispute by Japan and Russia.
