A type of tall medieval European shield with a distinctive pointed almond shape (hence also sometimes called an almond shield). Commonly associated with the Battle of Hastings (1066) due to its ubiquity on the Bayeux tapestry. Not to be confused with a heater shield, which is the classic smaller point-at-the-bottom shield shape commonly seen in heraldry, early issues of Captain America, and United States Interstate Highway System signage.
