One of two reddish-brown, bean-shaped organs found in vertebrates. They are located in the left and right retroperitoneal spaces, respectively. They receive blood from paired renal arteries; blood exits from paired renal veins. Each kidney is connected to a ureter, which carries excreted urine to the bladder.
