"The wind rises... We must try to live...!!!" - Paul Valéry, The Graveyard By The Sea.
Kaze Tachinu (風立ちぬ The Wind Rises) is a 2013 Japanese historical drama anime film written and directed by Miyazaki Hayao, and animated by Studio Ghibli.
It is the final feature film to date directed by Miyazaki, who announced his retirement in September 2013. The movie is a fictionalized biography of Horikoshi Jirou, a Japanese designer of fighter planes used by the Empire of Japan during World War II. The film is adapted from Miyazaki's manga of the same name, which was in turn loosely based on the 1937 short story "The Wind Has Risen" by Hori Tatsuo.
The movie was released by Toho on July 20, 2013 in Japan and by Touchstone Pictures in North America, first with a limited release on February 21, 2014, then a wide release on February 28, 2014. The film was released in the UK on May 9, 2014.
