John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 – December 8, 2016)
American military officer, astronaut and politician. A United States Marine Corps fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War. Chosen as one of the Mercury Seven, the first American astronauts. Became the first American to orbit the Earth on 20 February 1962 aboard the spacecraft Friendship 7. Was elected to the US Senate representing the state of Ohio from 1974 through 1999. On 29 October 1998, he returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle, becoming the oldest man to orbit the Earth.
