A skateboard or surfboard-like sci-fi or fantasy device that utilizes some means of levitation to allow it to either fly or hover above the ground. Hover boards were first described by author M. K. Joseph in a 1967 science fiction novel, and popularized by the Back to the Future film franchise.
Should not be confused with self-balancing scooters, which some companies have taken the term hoverboard to refer to their products.
