Battlecruiser of the Kongo class. Reconstructed and demilitarized as a training ship between 1929 and 1932. Further reconstructed and remilitarized from 1936-1940 and re-rated as a fast battleship. Her rebuilt fire control arrangements and bridge structure layout served as a model for the Yamato class. Crippled by gunfire at the First Battle of Guadalcanal and sunk by airborne torpedoes.
