I hate the art of fighting, but I wanna be the king of fighters!
--Dan Hibiki, Street Fighter Zero 3
Dan Hibiki (火引 弾), known simply as Dan, is a character from Capcom's Street Fighter franchise who first debuted in Street Fighter Zero. Dan is consistently portrayed as an arrogant, overconfident, yet utterly weak character in many of the games he is featured in. He is widely considered to be the comic relief of the series because of his over-the-top poses and battle cries.
He is originally created as a jab on SNK's Ryuuko no Ken characters Ryou Sakazaki and Robert Garcia, whom Capcom viewed as a rip-off of Ryu and Ken respectively. Notably featuring numerous taunts from SNK's own fighting game franchise The King of Fighters.
A (self-proclaimed) Hong Konger martial artist of Japanese origin. Dan's father, Gou Hibiki, was a rival of Sagat. Gou gouged out Sagat's right eye and Sagat beat him to death in retaliation. Because of this, Dan sought revenge on Sagat, training to become a fighter, but was expelled from Gouken's dojo when his motivations were learned. Dan thus developed his own style of Gouken's martial art merged with Muay Thai elements and called it Saikyo-ryu, "The Strongest Style" despite the complete weakness of his techniques.
Unlike the rest of the Street Fighter cast Dan can taunt while crouching or jumping. He even has a "super taunt" that uses up his entire super meter to perform the greatest and flashiest taunt in the world. The super taunt is so awesome that it gives his opponents great mental distress to the point where they behave erratically and can't focus on the match which allows Dan to go in for the kill and utterly humiliate his opponent. Bonus points for performing the super taunt at the very end of a match. It should be noted that this move does absolutely no damage whatsoever and Dan will be completely wide open to any attack due to how long the super taunt is. However it will allow Dan to cancel into his Ultra Combo.
