The G3 is a West German 7.62×51mm NATO battle rifle developed by Heckler & Koch in the 1950s, based on the earlier Spanish CETME Model 58. It became the standard Bundeswehr service rifle from 1959 until early 1990s. Utilizing roller-delayed blowback mechanism, and having major variants available with fixed buttstock or retractable metal one, its design also became the basis of other H&K weapons such as the MP5 submachine gun.
