The fifth and so far last game in the main Gensou Suikoden series, taking place 143 years after Gensou Suikoden IV and 7 years prior to Gensou Suikoden I, in the Queendom of Falena (to the south of Gensou Suikoden IV's Island Nations). It follows Freyjadour Falenas, the prince of Falena, as he leads a rebellion against the usurpers who overthrew his mother. Unlike every other game of the series, Freyjadour does not become the host of a True Rune.
Perhaps in response to the mixed reaction to Gensou Suikoden III and generally negative reaction to Gensou Suikoden IV, Gensou Suikoden V hearkens back heavily to Gensou Suikoden II, which is widely regarded as the high point of the series. Many Gensou Suikoden II characters appear or are alluded to in Gensou Suikoden V, and the gameplay eliminates most of the changes introduced in later games in favor of an upgraded version of Gensou Suikoden II's battle system. This effort to restore fans' faith in the series seems to have worked, as Gensou Suikoden V is generally regarded as the second best of the series, with many even ranking it as the best.
