The FN CAL (Carabine Automatique Légère) was a Belgian 5.56×45mm NATO assault rifle designed and manufactured by FN Herstal, based on a scaled-down FN FAL. The original model features a tubular handguard, large charging handle knob on the right side, stamped metal receiver and barrel shroud and ribbed magazine well. It was a market failure, and a predecessor to the FN FNC.
