Hirohito (April 29, 1901 – January 7, 1989), also called by his posthumous title Emperor Shōwa/Shouwa, was a Japanese emperor, whose reign (1926–1989) is known as the Shōwa period/era. He was eventually succeeded by son, Akihito, after his death.
He is known for being the Head of State of the Empire of Japan during the World War II era, his interest in marine biology and his signature phrase, "Ah, so" (あっそう, "I see").
