A large insect belonging to the superfamily Cicadoidea. Notable for their large, veiny transparent wings and their loud droning mating call.
In Japan the presence and droning cries of the cicada is heavily associated with summer (particularly on hot days with muggy weather). As such the cicada or its call is often used to help set the scene for a story happening during summer. In North America, periodic cicadas are famous for appearing in huge numbers in regular intervals.
