William Henry "Bill" Mauldin (1921-2003) was an American veteran of the Second World War, having served with the 45th Infantry Division before his satifical gag comics starring two regular dogfaces, Willie and Joe, earned him the attention of the publishers of Stars and Stripes, with whom he worked for the remainder of the war in the European Theatre of Operations.
Post-war, Mauldin continued his work as a cartoonist for various newspapers, becoming quite famous for publishing an image of a grieving Abraham Lincoln at the memorial in Washington DC in the wake of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
