The ARL 44 was a French heavy tank destroyer whose development started just before the end of World War II, after the liberation of France in 1944.
The ARL-44 bears very distinctive characteristics, with a WWI-style track system (similar to the Churchill) which runs across the whole side of its chassis. This tank is a mix of different inspirations, mainly late war German tank technology such as the Panther (tank) series or the Tiger II, from which it takes its sloped frontal armour and tall profile.
Only sixty of these tanks were ever completed, from 1949 onwards. The type proved to be unsatisfactory and was phased out in 1953.
