Latin: Vultur gryphus
This large black South American vulture features a ruff of white feathers surrounding the base of the neck and large white patches on the wings. The head and neck are nearly featherless, and are a dull red or grey. In the male, there is a wattle on the neck and a distinctive large comb or caruncle on the crown of the head.
The Andean condor features in several South American national coat-of-arms.
