In real life, the sword was smithed by Rai Kuniyuki, who founded the Rai school of swords. Over the years the sword was handed down through the Matsudaira Clan in the Akashi region of Japan. Currently stored in the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords in Tokyo.
In Touken Ranbu, Akashi considers himself the guardian of Hotarumaru and Aizen Kunitoshi. He has a lackadaisical personality and makes a big deal over not wanting to work or be motivated. However, he mentions that he will get involved if Hotarumaru is involved, showing rather blatant favoritism towards Hotarumaru over Aizen. His being a parental figure to the two swords is due to the fact that Kuniyuki's master is the father of Rai Kunitoshi, who smithed Aizen and Hotarumaru later on in life. The boy is also a bit of a space-case in game as well.
