Aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) converted from an unfinished Amagi-class battlecruiser of same name, saw service in World War II and 2nd Sino-Japanese War.
Served as the flagship of the First Air Fleet and led the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Was sunk during the Battle of Midway with the loss of 267 men months later.
Akagi's noticeable features were her triple flight deck set-up (feature she shared with converted Tosa-class battleship Kaga) during late 20s and early 30s, and her port side island (shared with purpose built aircraft carrier Hiryu) after her modernization during mid-30s.
