A cylindrical mechanical component that moves back and forth inside a similarly shaped chamber (often called a cylinder). Commonly associated with internal combustion engines, pumps, and various machinery, a piston transfers force by converting expanding gas or fluid pressure into mechanical motion—or vice versa.
