雛人形 (hina-ningyō) are ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in the traditional court dress of the Heian period, the sokutai and karaginu mo. Displayed before and during the Hinamatsuri (Japanese Doll Festival, or Girls' Day) held on March 3rd.
Tag refers to both the doll set itself and situations where characters dress up as any of the dolls.
The (typically red) multi-tiered stand where the dolls are set is called hinadan.
Hishimochi, hina arare, folding screen and bonbori are placed around the dolls.
