An immensely popular Japanese RPG series developed by Square Enix—formerly by Enix separately—with character designs by Toriyama Akira. The series—especially the earliest games—heavily influenced the development of the genre in Japan. The series was never as popular in the west as Final Fantasy due to delayed releases and the closure of Enix's North America office in the 1990s, but its profile has grown since the 2003 Square Enix merger.
Formerly known as Dragon Warrior in North America until 2005, due to a trademark conflict over a tabletop roleplaying game of the same name.
