The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency.
Established in 1908, the FBI operates as both an intelligence agency and a federal law enforcement organization. Its primary mission is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the country, and provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the FBI operates field offices across the United States and in select locations around the world. Its agents, trained in various investigative and tactical disciplines, work in close collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and international partners to address complex and multifaceted criminal and national security threats.
