SNK, an acronym of Shin Nihon Kikaku (新日本企画, lit. "New Japan Project"), is a legendary video game company, most notable for its powerful Neo Geo console from the 90s as well as various fighting games (like The King of Fighters), and arcade shooters like Metal Slug. Its main rival is Capcom.
SNK's predecessor Shin Nihon Kikaku Corporation was founded in 1978 by Kawasaki Eikichi. In 1981, the name was informally shortened to SNK Corporation, which became the company's official name in 1986.
SNK merged with Playmore in 2003 after going bankrupt in 2001 to form SNK Playmore. The company eventually changed its name back to SNK in 2016.
