A Destroyer is a type of medium-sized (smaller than most cruisers including lights but larger than a corvette or frigate) warship designed for interception, torpedo attack, long-range patrol, and defense of larger capital ships including Battleships and Carriers.
Although originally designed for the distinct purpose of hunting torpedo boats, destroyers have become for the past 80 years, the most common large warships still operated by bluewater navies today.
