The film was released in theaters on May 25, 1983. It grossed $374 million worldwide during its initial theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1983.
The main conflict of the film is Luke facing Darth Vader knowing that he is his father.
16 years after the release of Return of the Jedi, George Lucas wrote and directed the prequel trilogy, consisting of the films The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
