Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video game developer, publisher, and distribution company that is best known for its Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts role-playing video game franchises, among numerous others. Several of them have sold over 10 million copies worldwide, with the Final Fantasy franchise alone selling over 115 million.
The original Square Enix Co., Ltd. was formed as the result of a merger between Enix Corporation and Square Co., Ltd. in April 2003, with Enix legally absorbing Square. In 2009, they acquired Eidos Interactive Limited, which was renamed to Square Enix Europe. This branch oversees the company's western studios and franchises.
