A metal plate bearing someone's name that indicates ownership of whatever it's attached to. Compared to a name tag, which is sewn onto a piece of fabric and often made of the same material, a nameplate is a (usually) metal, tent-shaped bar placed atop a desk, or a flat sheet affixed near the front door of a house.
