Cogito, ergo sum / I think, therefore I am
Cogito, ergo sum / I think, therefore I am
Hey all, sorry to take a little while on this. The idea for this piece should be mostly clear from the title. It’s inspired by Descartes cogito, the well-known syllogism: I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am. At its root it expresses that insofar as one has thought, the existence of oneself, the thinking mind at least, cannot be doubted. The motivation for having Shinji here is that through much of Eva, the developments orbit around him, since he has the ability or hypothetical role to bring about instrumentality (or other complex transformative events, e.g. world restructuring in the rebuilds). Essentially, the entirety of the world’s fate must and does eventually come back to him, he being the final pivot point to rotate so to speak. So that in effect, his role is not so unlike Descarte’s cogito, that which cannot be doubted and which stands in relation to everything and that which must always be accounted for in some form.
On that note, another influence was Da Vinci’s Vetruvian man, known for capturing the anatomical proportion of Vetruvius’ ideal human body. This I had a similar structural centrality to Descartes cogito in his epistemology so It felt inclined to draw some of inspiration from there as well (arc patterns), which you can see a bit of in the process haha. (Da Vinci’s is included at the end also)
I had a few more thoughts but that’s enough explanation now. Until next time. The next few will be more light/free style.
