Secret Santa: Ariel
Alriiight! My third year participating in All-Disney-Princess's Secret Santa event complete! Whoo! Man, I cannot tell you how happy I am that they extended the deadline to the end of this month instead of the beginning. It made it a lot less stressful. I really want to join again this year so the last thing I wanted was to be late. And thanks to that deadline exetension that ain't gonna happen. Ha!
So about the piece. My recipient was Mareishon. Some of the things she said she liked in her questionnaire were Tangled, The Little Mermaid and The Lord of the Rings. I love all of those things so that really set the gears in my head whirling. The first idea that came to mind was pretty much the one I went with, this one. Except in the original idea Ariel was supposed to be holding the ring. But I thought that idea was a bit too dark cause we all know what happens when you get your hands on that ring. And I did not want my recipient to get a picture with a future scenario like that. So I drew the Ring off to the side cause I still wanted it to be included. We'll just assume she never finds it. Another little detail in the piece is one of the Leaves of Lorien in her hair. Ariel's always putting things in her hair that don't belong there. LOL
The second idea I got was a piece of Rapunzel painting some Lord of the Rings art on her tower wall. Let's just pretend Lord of the Rings is one of her three books. You can look at a super messy sketch riiight here Rapunzel-painting . I wasn't feeling very backgroundy at the time, and that concept is practically all background. So I didn't use it. But while searching through some references of Galadriel for the wall painting I came across some shots of her holding the Light of Earendil. And I thought, Oh my God, that's perfect for the Ariel idea. It gives a great light source that'll bring focus to her face, it's Lord of the Rings related, it's something Ariel would definitely be stoked to find, and best of all it's something that won't make Ariel kill all her sisters to keep.
So I guess the moral of the story is to try out ideas even if you end up just going with the first one. You might find something that'll make the plan you do go with 100X better. :D (Big Grin)
