However, as humans built cities to light up the world of darkness, they stopped being afraid the night.
It was a ceremony to put the dead to rest.
A native festival became the day of a saint, then a day of buying gifts for children, and then a reason for people to go out...
A text-book example, huh.
With the fear forgotten, all that remained of this festival was just a practical exchange of gifts.
Or maybe it was a way to instill a sense of dignity in the fantasies of children, if you want to put it that way.
As time goes by, any given religion acquires ever more nuance, and thus more sects which aim to define its true essence.
It's become a day of consumption for a society that values materialism over faith in the divine.
