Aircraft Carrier Hermes Sunk!
A Type 99 bomber of the carrier Shokaku squadron attacks the Royal Navy's light aircraft carrier "Hermes" during the Battle of Ceylon.
In April 1942, the Nagumo Task Force raided the island of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) in the Indian Ocean, and on the 9th of the same month, discovered the British aircraft carrier "Hermes" in retreat from the combat zone. The carrier, which had no air cover from friendly aircraft, was nothing but a "moving target" for the Japanese bombers, and was lost in the sea just 15 minutes after the attack began. The strike rate of the bombers was 82%, an astonishing figure.
I have not drawn an illustration of an aircraft for a long time, so I drew and submitted this illustration for the first time in a long while for practice.
On May 22, Mr. Nobuo Shimoda, a leading aircraft illustrator whom I respect very much, passed away. We pray for his soul rest in peace.
