USS Northampton CA-26 (Revised)
It really took me long enough to finish this. She's basically one of the earliest characters designed in my fleet. She's of an impression of a real beauty, with a lot of obedience and compassion.
She has the hull of a light cruiser and the mast looked too tall for her size, making her look a bit frail. But she always stayed quietly on her escort job, whether she was following Enterprise off Wake Island, or taking part in the Tokyo Raid for a long distance, not to mention she also participated in guarding Midway. She likes to indulge in Hornet's coquetry (unfortunately, something Yorktown couldn't give her), allowing her making her hair into strands of twists.
Since the college where the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) was trained was set in Northampton, the school's nickname was also called "USS Northampton". She was very happy about this coincidence and put on the same uniform as theirs to show her support in allowing women into naval service.
After the reorganization of TF17, she showed more affection on the young aircraft carrier. When the Hornet was hit by a fierce air strike, she was ordered to try to save this poor kid of the Yorktown class. However, even if the reaction has been much faster than that at Midway, no one can but admit the message of death brought about by the Kates. Abandoning ship was inevitable.
Northampton sang the final lullaby for her—it would be good for her to fall asleep sooner, since scuttling awaits. But for Hornet, who had a strong desire to live, all of Northampton's attempts were in vain.
Only a month later in Tassafaronga, her own life also came to an end. She sank in the dark night, as quietly as she was alive.
Perhaps we'll never forget her gentleness and affection.
