There is a sliding scale tax based on age for vehicles in Japan, broadly based on the concept that older cars are less environmentally friendly and more unsafe on the road, thus needing to be charged more. This is a major reason for a lack of older cars on the road in Japan, and why many older cars are exported to other right-hand drive countries; the other being the incredibly strict car inspection system.
