Screw your red packages.
This is specifically referring to the "red package events" in WeChat, a popular mobile SNS program.
The "red package" (hong bao) is a synonym for monetary gifts for any occasion, since the money is usually packed in a cheering red colored package (like the one in the picture). In WeChat, one can start these "red package events" in a group anytime, simply by using microtransaction and the "red package" function. To receive one of these packages, the event participants will have to enter a specific code by typing or voice, or simply have to be fast, refreshing like crazy seconds before the event starts.
Unless preset by the event starter, every participant will get a random amount, and it can be as low as RMB 1 fen (Currency unit equivalent to USD 1 cent, exchange to USD $0.0015). If the event starter put little money in to begin with, or the event starter put a large amount in but opened the event to an even larger amount of participants, the chance of getting a "gift" that is 10 times smaller than the minimum denomination of currency in circulation is very high. Also, unless announced by the event starter, there is no way to know how much the event starter put in the package whatsoever. It is a frustrating result, to say the least, for someone who tried very hard for one such event.
A notable "red package event" like this is the Super Star New Year's Greeting event. In this event, a dozen Chinese movie stars/singers send their new year's regard to you, and each of them are offering RMB ¥1 million in gift. The event, however, is open for merely hours in a precious few days, and to all users of WeChat. Which, according to Tencent's mid-2017 report, is only a handful away from 1 billion.
tl;dr: FUCK IT, NOT WORTH IT.
