Perfect Cherry Blossom
[Old description:] I'm putting this here now as a preview for the AWA Scroll Project (headed by Totaku) background section which I've been working on for the past many weeks. I finally completed it this week, but due to the project being still under wraps, a full reveal of the art won't be allowed until Anime Weekend Atlanta has come and gone, at the end of September. But that's only a month away. This is only a fraction of the detail in the massive 36" section I've been given. (Literally. This bit is 1336 × 1351 pixels at full resolution; the full section spans ... 10808 pixels wide by 3654 pixels tall.) So ... if you like this, stick around for the final version's reveal in five weeks or so. <=]
---
And ... now here we are. September 5th and the all-clear's been given.
This has probably been the most challenging, exhausting and stimulating artwork done to date. I'm not sure if it's the perfect compliment to the characters assigned to me - such a task is hard, with the varied styles of the contributing artists, but I tried to make something memorable and unorthodox, doing the best to turn around a bad situation.
As a bit of background (lol), I initially drew the inset-panel image as the full background, but soon realised that with the characters given, many would be standing on air and it just wouldn't do. But rather than abandoning my sketch which I'd grown quite attached to, I converted it into a folding panel within Hakugyokurou itself. Scene-within-a-scene. Oh the weirdness that comes out of mistakes.
So. This is the entire PCB world, from right to left, contained in the folding-panel: Letty's snowy path, Chen's cat village, Alice's house, Prismriver Mansion, Hakugyokurou steps and the palace itself for Youmu, Saigyou Ayakashi for Yuyuko, and the steps leading into the Void for Ran and Yukari.
Not sure what else there is to say but, I hope seeing it both with and without characters allows it to be appreciated in different but equally valid ways.
If you can spare the data, download for full view please. You're missing out on a tonne of detail if all you go by is the 1600 pixels wide dA limit.
