Oh~June 26thDid you know? Today is the Lightning Memorial Day!
In Enchou 9 (930) rain did not fall in June. Court officials gathered in Seiryouden in the Imperial Palace discussing about how to pray for rain. Then suddenly a dark thundercloud came from Mount Atago and a lightning strike killed at least 5 palace officials. One of them was Fujiwara no Kiyotsura who died instantly.
After many misfortunes, they believed that this was the curse of Sugawara no Michizane who got exiled by the Fujiwara clan. Michizane was then deified to calm down his angry ghost.
This is known as the Seiryouden Lightning Strike Incident.
Sugawara no Michizane is believed to be an ancestor of Touhou's Soga no Tojiko. He is also known by the name Tenjin, a god of learning.
