Unapproved images

Yes, I'm still getting the feel of things so thanks for being patient with me.

I have a question regarding unapproved images. At the moment I have 30 of 54 images not approved (which seems bad to me) and was wondering exactly what this means. In other words, am I going about uploading incorrectly, my content is unwanted, etc? I'd rather not get a bad rep for whatever reason so I'm just putting it out there. Thanks!

Unapproved images are ones that none of the mods liked enough to approve. Simple as that. If not one of them decides to approve a post, that means it's not the kind of content that's wanted on Danbooru.

So take a look at the images you've uploaded that didn't get approved. Don't upload more like those. Now look at your stuff that DID get approved, and other users' posts that were approved. Upload more like those.

Actually what you are seeing there is an old school game CG or something similar (think pixel art, GIF quality, and 256 colors) converted into jpeg. This is always a bad idea, and I don't know why people do that. GIF is usually good enough and won't destroy the quality.

In his defense, there ARE oekaki boards that save screencaps as really shite JPGs automatically. I actually have a hard time deciding what to do with those images because they could be well-drawn oekakis, but they're still really crappy JPGs.

I appreciate it, but I shouldn't have an excuse (other than my unfamiliarity). But I'm glad I'm at least figuring out how to manage myself properly.

About what level of quality is considered artifacted? I'm sure there are better quality images compared to the one posted that still count as artifact and I'd like to know the basic limit.

Hard to say. Some users are faaaaaaaaaar more sensitive/picky about artifacts than others. I probably fall somewhere in the middle. If the edges look unnaturally fuzzy, I'll lean in towards my monitor and confirm. Basically, if a line that you assume should be clean seems hazy, it's often artifacting. Or if a clean color gradient doesn't look, er, clean... I don't know how to word it, but reds suffer especially badly.

I really don't know if anyone can put a value on it or anything.

Have a browse through the jpeg_artifacts tag. I think post #216649 is a good "average" indicator--but basically if it's quite noticable, it's probably gonna end up getting a jpeg_artifacts tag. Which doesn't mean there are absolutely no situations in which those images would be suitable for danbooru, but it is one of the criteria.

I also try to keep to a minimum resolution of about 600x600 (unless it's animated or pixel art or so). Of course if an image is amazing and it's 350x650, I would upload that, but just as a rough guideline it's useful.

And well, it seems to me that clean (or at least "nice") art is more appreciated by the moderators most of the time than hardcore, and especially not fetish stuff. I don't mind hardcore stuff as long as it's well-drawn--hell, one of my favorite artists is ino, so I'm not all that squeamish.

Anyway, it's not absolutely set in stone but those are some of the things I keep in mind when I upload stuff to danbooru. (Of course I have the luxury of not having to go through the mod queue, but I still have my own standards to uphold.)

Exactly. Notice that the person who uploaded post #216649 and the person who tagged it with "jpeg_artifacts" are one and the same - me, as it so happens :P Sometimes JPEG artifacts are not severe enough to make the image beyond redemption, but in such cases I still make a note that they're there, lest someone come along and say "Ha! 0xCCBA696! This picture has ARTIFACTS!" :P

Opinions (and possibly some advice) from a basic member...

Uploading images and getting them approved is like hit-or-miss. But it depends on the images you upload, their quality, and the individual tastes of the mods.

For very good images, you can scour several sites, including Japanese image boards. Caps are fine, but they have to be either of good quality and/or interesting. Same goes for scans and original art. Watch out for JPEG artifacts, though.

Last, but not least, tag them properly.

This is all I can give.

I like stitched together caps from high res raws of sexy pans. Provided they're done well, of course.

I see. Thanks so much for the info. I just realized a recent upload was deleted because it had an aerisdies watermark. I didn't even notice it. ;_; But I do like reasons besides "not approved in three days" so I can get a better feel of exactly what my problems are. Thanks again guys!

What's that tool do? does it check to see if an image you're trying to uplaod is already on danbooru?

Because the only reason I don't contribute mroe often is because I'm a fraid of uploading dupes.

Are uploads of certain magazine scans looked down upon? Because about a month ago, I uploaded 2 different Higurashi magazine scans in a row that were not duplicates in any way and what I considered to be excellent quality, but they ended up being deleted after being unapproved in 3 days. The only reasons that I can think of for them not being approved were that there might have been too much text in them or perhaps there weren't mods that were Higurashi fans lurking those 3 days. :P Up until then, I've previously had a handful of images that were also deleted but I could understand as they were probably poor quality or just not particularly interesting to look at. I've noticed other magazine scans that have gotten approved so I'm not sure what was wrong with mine. Would it be disallowed for me to attempt to upload them again or should I just forget about it?
