For science fiction works with elements from East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese) culture

BUR #35751 is pending approval.

mass update science_fiction east_asian_architecture -> silkpunk
mass update science_fiction eastern_dragon -> silkpunk
mass update science_fiction china_dress -> silkpunk
mass update science_fiction chinese_clothes -> silkpunk
mass update science_fiction kimono -> silkpunk
mass update science_fiction japanese_clothes -> silkpunk

Because silkpunk basically means science_fiction influenced by East Asian culture. Although the person who coined this term is still gatekeeping it, I can't think of a better name for East Asian culture-influenced science fiction. Besides, term exactness isn't really enforced on Danbooru (just like how you can use the tag yaoi for bara works).

BUR #35752 is pending approval.

mass update science_fiction (~east_asian_architecture ~eastern_dragon ~chinese_clothes ~japanese_clothes) -> silkpunk

good concept, but formatting the bur like this should be a bit faster - the bot won't be trying to update posts that have multiple of those tags at once more than once. skipping kimono and china dress since they imply japanese and chinese clothes, respectively, so those extra lines aren't doing anything

i'd also try changing just science fiction to (~science_fiction ~cyberpunk), since neither seems to imply the other yet should be relevant here

you might also want to consider manually making a favgroup for posts that aren't tagged with any of those scifi- or asia-related tags included in the BUR, like robot, that are more likely to have false positives

Thanks, now the BUR looks way nicer.

Should've included the tags like cyborg, cyberpunk, and dragon_print as well. Just any tags related to science_fiction and East Asian culture.

I'm personally just concerned about the potential overlap with cyberpunk, since that genre has always had an element of orientalism induced by the Japanese economic miracle and the fears that Japanese industry will dominate American industry, which is why Japanese aesthetics remain prominent in works of the genre such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Blade Runner 2049 despite the fact that China has long-since dropped into the role of the East Asian adversary IRL.

One would have to garden the tag after the BUR passes just to avoid problems.

I'll echo Tamuraakemi's concern about non-relevant images being in this update and think that this will probably need to be hand-gardened.

Regardless I think this tag definitely needs an explanation and a wiki. I've never heard of this term before, and while the concept of Cyber Samurai and Sanfrantokyo comes to mind reading the name after looking through some of the images pending to be updated I realized I couldn't tell at a glance what would be a mistag or not.

For example there's a fair bit of mecha in the search. post #7040555 or post #6866034 for instance. And while these are universally recognized as culturally Japanese, down to the kabuto-inspired heads on the Gundam, since we have a mecha tag they should naturally be excluded right? I guess "East Asian Science Fiction" seems broad without more guidelines.

The guideline is basically: it must look East Asian enough, such as a cyberpunk-looking shrine, a sci-fi weapon shaped like a katana, a futuristic costume that looks like a hanfu, and such.
Some examples so you know what I'm talking about:

Yes, works featuring cyber samurai also count.

So, someone just wearing a qipao in an otherwise cyberpunk setting means its a whole new genre too? That seems really silly. Plus cyberpunk =/= steampunk =/= science fiction

I feel like the first step should have been fleshing out this tag, gardening posts into it so people can see that it exists, that it's useful, and have far more examples than a single image for what it describes. Justify the tag's existence first and then propose BURs to fill in the backlog.

But also, like... is post #4176924 really what you have in mind for this tag? If you're not going to put in the effort to garden this tag to populate it, will you put in the effort to curate it either?

Exactly. There was literally just one post in it. Yes it may take work but so soes everything on this site.

This feels really inaccurate and a terrible idea as Silkpunk is closer to Steampunk than Cyberpunk in almost every way.

Like this https://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/3653527?q=cyberpunk+japanese_armor+
Is cyberpunk

But this

And this

Are Silkpunk

what's asian about the first silkpunk example?

changing my votes to negative, this seems like a messy idea now

As definitelysleeping says, this tag need more example and a proper wiki. You can't be lazy and let everything be managed by this BUR if accepted. We need more example of this silkpunk thing. Sure we can google it and found some explanation of this, even though it still being gatekeeped. But as the one who proposed this tag, i want you to take the initiative to populate this tag first. For now, I give negative vote for this.

I like the idea of a new silkpunk tag but you gotta make work to populate the tag and give examples.

I'd like for you to take the effort to create a wiki and give us clear examples while there is a pool of posts to see and make a proper decision.

Like I've done in the toned_female tag before I became a builder, albeit with some help from AdmiralPectoral and other experienced Builders and Contributors: https://danbooru.donmai.us/forum_topics/27055 . I personally tagged most of the toned female posts into the tag and created the wiki. (See the history of both Post history and Wiki history)

I would eventually love to see this become a proper tag rather than this BUR turn to obscurity. Hence my support for it.

Since the wiki's been mentioned quite a bit now, I'll just say that I don't think we really need the "gatekeeping" part, or it should at least be worded in a more neutral way. Explaining how the creator thinks it should be used would make it easier to contrast with how we decide to use it and would benefit users already familiar with its "proper" use. Currently, however, the statement focuses more on the creator than the actual term and makes it look like we're calling him out. That's not something we want.
