category critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail) -> character

The game portrays these as sentient, including those not based on playable characters, so they qualify as characters.

Unfortunately the game primarily refers to them using the generic-sounding term "creations" and I don't remember seeing any more appropriate term appearing in-game, so the naming question is still open.

Once the category is changed, we can add the following implications:

imply blade_(sesame_cake)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply clara_(pure_sugar_child)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply dan_heng_(rice_dumpling)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply guinaifen_(troublemaker)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply herta_(wisteria_cake)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply kafka_(shader_cat)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply march_7th_(ice_cake)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply qingque_(lucky_snack)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply ruan_mei_(lambda's_friend)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)
imply trailblazer_(trash_cake)_(honkai:_star_rail) -> critter_pick_(honkai:_star_rail)

Sentience isn't really how we decide what qualifies as a character. "Species" tags are typically kept as general tags. Character tags are supposed to be individuals for the most part.

howto:character says, in bold:

> If it talks, acts on its own, or is otherwise shown to be sentient in the source material (game, anime, manga, novel), it is a character.

I would also contend that species are usually character tags rather than general tags when distinctive to a particular copyright. E.g. chocobo, takodachi_(ninomae_ina'nis), titan (shingeki no kyojin) (even titan (generic) (shingeki no kyojin) is a character tag!), slime (genshin impact) (compare non-copyright-specific slime (creature)), all 1000+ Pokémon species.

See:
Final Fantasy XIV (as well as a few other FF) races
Warcraft races

Two examples off the top of my head.

The general rule of thumb is "Does this race/species have named representatives? Then it's a general tag. Otherwise it's a character tag." There are named representatives of the "critter picks", ergo, it should be a general tag. Even if it were made into a character tag, the named ones shouldn't implicate it if unnamed ones exist, instead the generic tag should be used exclusively for the unnamed ones, in the same way adeptus astartes is used for generic, unnamed space marines, and not every single named space marine character.

It's a... complicated situation, really.

I wish there was a way for those 10 chartags for specific, named critters to somehow auto-add the Critter Pick tag - it makes sense, those little creatures are by definition that specific type of creature.

But... What I don't really like is Critter Pick becoming a chartag. It's a species that consists of very unique individuals, there's no "generic" version of those kitty cakes. We have 10 critters inspired by specific human(oid) playable characters, 5*5*5*11*6=8250 potential obtainable creations from the breeding minigame, and then a dozen of NPC, unobtainable creations... Not to mention all the potential, fanon designs that are not confined by the game's limitations, like in post #7063439. It's a very different situation from species tags like Pikachu, where all members look more-or-less the same.

I feel like those 8250 are the generic versions of the kitty cakes though. They're not modeled after anything or anyone specific, they're random colours and patterns just like a cat can be orange or black or siamese or black and white with spots or etc.

Unfortunately, character tags are not permitted to imply general tags. In contrast to generic Space Marines or Night Elves, there's also virtually no artist interest in the generic-style critters -- apart from the named Ashy Paste, I could only spot one depicted on Danbooru so far and even that was an official art.

Even the critters based on playable characters are not fully individual. They don't have any distinct personality other than being critter picks that resemble a player character. The game even lets you create duplicates of the same critter (including those based on playable characters) and bring them into the game world, though granted I have yet to see any artist depict this particular situation.

If there are no unnamed examples, then it should stay a general tag. Tagging convenience isn't a reason to change categories.

Hm, I looked back into the game, and rather than dozens, there only seem to be only 4 or so NPC models (outside of the breeding minigame) for those kittens, all of which should be visible here - light green casing with brown fur, creme-white casing with orange fur, pink casing with purple fur, and orange casing with brown fur. Most notably, Ashy Paste is not the only user of the light green casing with brown fur model, as there's Mung "Sentimental" Bean and a couple of unnamed other ones.
