[BUR] Granblue Fantasy character and race names

Oops, got distracted and didn't check back here for a while.

I tried to keep JP names that were clearly different from the EN names (for instance, Uno == Anre), so that people using the JP language version of the game can search for Uno, and EN players can search for Anre.

I also tried to get rid of ones that are mislocalized (Katalina is correct, Catalina is not, for instance, and usual Romanization of JP text uses "k" instead of "c", so Katalina is both matching the official EN name as well as easier to search for people who are just guessing from the kana.)

There were a few that I requested an alias for (Cucouroux vs. Kukuru) because the EN spelling is not evident from the JP spelling, even though it's pronounced similarly, to assist in searching for people coming entirely from the JP version.

The last category are the ones that were straight up wrong, which I tried to change (Elegy vs. Ejaeli).

It would be really helpful if someone with some Danbooru know-how would go over them or point out issues, since I'm familiar with the game but not really with Danbooru workings. I can answer questions that are posed if need be.

I'll be sifting through these for now, but I think this is almost right. EN has some really questionable localizations so there are places where it's more fitting to have the JP name instead, so we would create implications the other way around.

I feel like "Draph" should really be preferred over "Doraf", though you are right that both should be available.

Keeping Carren (Karen)'s JP is fine, I must have missed that. Her last name should definitely be attached though, she even shouts it during her intro fate in both EN and JP ( http://i.imgur.com/ROhBPSG.png ).

Katalina definitely needs to keep her last name (Aryze), since she says it in game and in the anime.

Missed Societte's, keeping Socie is probably okay if you really want, even though it doesn't strictly match the kana.

Vira's last name is mentioned in two Fates (one of the intros and Lowain's cross fate), so I'd prefer keeping it, though if convention says to drop it, I guess that's fine...

We should be sticking to either aliases or updates here, since we want to always keep one character under the same tag given there are no variations. My friend's not a booru-er so some of it may just be him trying to say implication/alias

So then if we're aliasing EN -> JP (for easier searching) the changes would be:

That makes sense. A lot of the others would have to be flipped around as well, then. (I'm not actually sure the syntax order, so if it's as you listed, then you probably want to flip all the Ten Gods names also).

Dropping all last names is fine, too, I guess. It just bothers me a lot, for some reason...

The way implicating/aliasing works is that the latter tag is the dominant tag.

So alias camieux -> kumuyu, for example, would make all posts tagged camieux be instead tagged kumuyu. The tag camieux would never be used unless it was de-aliased.

I think I'll leave it up to you for switching around the syntax order if this makes sense to you. By the way, since we've established that these aliases/updates should go EN -> JP, make sure you note the discrepancies if there are any.

Alright, I went through the list and made sure EN was on leftside, JP was on rightside, and removed the last names.

I had a similar question, so instead of making a whole new thread, I was hoping it'd be ok to just ask here. For the characters Viktor Nikiforov and Katsuki Yuuri, shouldn't they be spelled how they are in all official publications + merchandise (where their names are spelled "Victor" and "Yuri" respectively)? The "Viktor" and "Yuuri" spellings are really only used among fans, so it might be better to have their names spelled officially and have the fan spellings aliased to the official spellings. For proof of official spellings differing from Danbooru spellings, see for example the large amount of merchandise of both Victor and Yuri with their names written on it. Here is a specific example if you don't want to comb through all that.

You're better off creating a new thread for that since we're discussing characters from another series entirely. I don't think anyone would answer your question here if it'd derail the topic too heavily.

Our usage of romanizations (from what I've seen) really largely depends. Sometimes the official names are actual crapshoots (e.g. this topic, many of the English localizations really suck) but other times, they do make sense (e.g. straight romanization) and thus it is justified.

@kozaki.saya I haven't taken a look yet, but I'll post it back to my friend sometime later. By the way, one thing -- if the name is fairly commonly used (in NA terms), then it's more fitting for it to be an alias. Otherwise, if it sees rare usage and/or is practically a less accurate, alternate romanization, it's better to use a mass update.

I'm not hugely familiar with GBF, but I wanted to give my support to Drunk -> Drang. As mentioned in forum #114974, doranku instead of dorangu is an accepted alternate way of writing Drang in Japanese.

Also, would the _(cosplay) tags related to these need to be dealt with separately? E.g., vira_(cosplay) -> vira_lilie_(cosplay).

Stuff I noticed in the BUR:

mass update io_euclase -> io_(granblue_fantasy)
is reversed, but there's nothing under io_(granblue_fantasy) anyway. Maybe someone already updated it in the intervening months?

Erune, harvin, and draph aliases are reversed, like Mikaeri mentioned.

For last names, even if they're rarely used, I don't see a reason to omit them unless they're spoilers. help:tags does say to use full names.

It would be, I think, although it could easily be fixed with a script if needed.

I've been keeping the request updated as I find more stuff. It just seemed like there wasn't really any interest in it from other people, so I wasn't sure what to do besides make sure things were as mentioned.

I prefer last names, but the BUR I think has a bunch of last names removed because of the earlier discussion. I can change those back if people feel it's reasonable.

2. Official EN name is just an alternate romanization of the official JP name. E.g., ジータ (jiita) is djeeta_(granblue_fantasy) or エルン (erun) is erune. From howto:romanize, "For non-Japanese or outright made-up proper names, use their official spellings where possible." So we prefer Djeeta and erune.

As far as I understand, his name's meant to be Greek, and 'k' is the more common romanization for the sound these days, so maybe 'Okto' is best? (Same way it should be Thalatha, not Sarasa...)

I have updated the race names to point to erune/harvin/draph.

If it's Greek, that makes sense. We've had him tagged as Okto, no real need to change that without a good reason.

I generally make the cutoff at 15-20 posts if there's a chance for more posts appearing under the tag, so 55 seems qualified for the alias.

I think the EN names should be inserted somehow or another (even if some are unused currently) because the EN translation of the game is fairly recent (early last year), while the JP names have been around longer. It would seem reasonable to assume that the EN names will gain usage over time, as new players come into the game without having played on the JP translation prior. However, if people think it's not reasonable to insert (currently unused) EN names, they can be left off for the time being.

I have modified the BUR again to match things names like Cucouroux/Kukuru and Camieux/Kumuyu, as well as replaced the last names for now.
