Feature Request: Tumblr *_500.img -> *_1280.img automation?

I'm still bewildered at that site where proper feature-implementation is done (has "r88...88" in the URL?), and I'm iffy on going at the Danboo-2 Issues topic with this, so however this would be best handled (or if it's being handled already), please direct this where it's less obtrusive. Anyway...

So Tumblr images commonly carry one of two file name suffixes: _500 and _1280. The latter, however their system works, allows bigger images, but from a post's page, this isn't always linked in some way, requiring instead manually changing the number to see if a latter version exists (which isn't always the case).

With the way the Tag History seems to take the latest source field in an edit chain (such as uploading from the image's URL, then replacing the source with the original Tumblr post) as the only source field (I'm not versed in Danbooru's deeper workings, so I'm unaware if there's a way to check every single tag edit), checking Tumblr uploads for a potential mismatch becomes even more of a chore.

Could Danbooru be made to recognize "_500" Tumblr URLs and check for 1) a correspondent "_1280" URL and 2) if such is of greater size? This way, users will be less likely to upload lower-resolution versions, even if some operational confusion might happen.

Automatically trying to use the biggest size when the user attempts to upload a smaller version is part of issue #1866. I'll add Tumblr to The List.

For now I created a tumblr_sample tag for these images.

Actually I just double-checked and this is not true. Danbooru does already correct pixiv medium thumbnails and pixiv manga samples by replacing them with their largest equivalent.

It doesn't correct pixiv small thumbnails though.

You mean I can upload without having to press 'O' (open) for full-size images (for multi-uploads)?

TIL Pixiv has an 'O' keyboard shortcut for opening the full size of manga images.

But yes, it should work for Pixiv.

Obviously this only works if you do a source upload. If you save the image to your computer and then upload it to Danbooru manually Danbooru has no way of correcting it. But you shouldn't be doing it that way in the first place.

Thank you for all the information, Toks. Thankfully I don't seem to be in quite the same size boat as Kiki, but knowing such measures are already being implemented is a great relief going forward.

Also, I'd note (if it's note already; typing here before checking any links above) that some Tumblr images have neither of the two above, which I'm supposing would mean that's the version of that image.

(Good heavens, when did dA URLs get re-linked? Time to go and switch my uploads back...)

Added this feature for the next update.

Specifically it will try to replace _250/_400/_500 tumblr links with the _1280 version if it exists. If the _1280 version doesn't exist it will do nothing.

Since the way tumblr handles these different sizes is a bit confusing I'm not sure if that's enough to cover 100% of cases; tell me if I'm missing something.

Also added for twitpic, deviantart, and small pixiv thumbnails.

Problem: post #1360337 has 500, 500h, and 1280 versions:

  • 500: 500x97
  • 1280: 1280x249
  • 500h: 2560x498

I don't know if there's a form that exceeds both 1280 width AND 500 height.

Still skittish of Github (will I ever acquaint myself?), so on chance of being unforgivable, would Hentai Foundry image uploads be able to have their Source links redirected as their picture pages? For example...

Indirectly, the deviantART method redirects to the Gallery URLs, which is technically fine (unless it'd break if dA changed things), but what I suppose is are the more direct links include (more or less) the image's title on the site, which is sometimes too generic to be worth including here as Artist Commentary. Would it be possible to link to those, and would there be enough preference to enact it?

It's not actually following the links, it's deriving a url from the original image url.

The former should be entirely doable (/a/username/image# -> /pictures/user/username/image#) though.

Linking to the "Gathering-Power" url seems impossible. The direct image url is http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/046/c/d/gp_webr_by_animeflux-d5v0kpm.jpg, which doesn't have "Gathering-Power" in it. Instead of "Gathering-Power", it could link to a "gp-webr" url, like so: http://animeflux.deviantart.com/art/gp-webr-354425818 (derived from "gp_webr" in the original), which in turn dA will redirect to "Gathering-Power".

But I don't think that's what you're asking for, as it still wouldn't have the real title in it, and dA is still doing a redirection.

Even if there's a compromise of titles (and heck, blindly shooting, maybe it was "gp webr", but was retitled on the page later?), would a displayed "/art/" link be preferred to a "/gallery/" one? What are the "d5v0kpm" and "354425818" bits, and would one have more use than the other in hunting information regarding the image if the link went dead? I feel like I'm fussing over nothing advantageous, but a situation like (deleted) post #1480324 comes to mind. I'm sure it was uploaded via a dA image URL, but the tag history only shows the dead-at-time-of-upload "/art/" link, and I wouldn't know how to go about determining what the direct link is/was. (Forgive me, it's late here and I've little idea what I'm going on about.)

5v0kpm is the id of the image, in base 36. 354425818 is the id of the image, in base 10. They're equivalent in usefulness, since you can convert between them. (The "d" before the base 36 just seems to be some sort of marker saying "watch out, the stuff that comes after this a base 36 number".)

If the "/art/" url is dead, I believe it's impossible to get the direct image link from it directly. You need to actually visit the "/art/" url to find that, as far as I'm aware. Though I'm not sure why you'd want it, since I'd assume the direct link is just as dead as the "/art/" one is.

the direct link was http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs25/f/2008/127/5/7/5735ab9eee6d58844e579d08fa30d80a.jpg
it was posted sometime in 2008 and the format back then was a little different. the file is still there apparently if it's inside the awful deviantArt storage. it will vanish in time if the user decided to delete it.

when uploading from deviantart, it's best to check that the url starts at 'http://fc'. it guarantees you the direct non-thumbnail version. the user can always rename the image but the original link will never change.
