Wince tag discussion deux

Posted under General

The wince tag needs to be discussed again, because its usage is all over the place.

Last time it was discussed, a wince doesn't necessarily mean an eye is closed or not, that it isn't a subset of wink or any other tag. However, a casual glance at the thumbnails show that wince is overwhelmingly used for a flinching, reflexive wink. I've even noticed one user replace wink with wince in post #780305, which is not helpful when it's still a wink by our definition of the word.

So far, I can think of two solutions to deal with it:

  • Continue with the current wince definition. Requires cleanup by adding wink to posts missing the tag. All 81 pages of it.
  • Alias wince to wink or nuke the tag, since the other meanings of wince are lost on everyone. A more intuitive tag (flinch?) should be added before doing so.

Thoughts?

–verb (used without object)
1.
to draw back or tense the body, as from pain or from a blow; start; flinch.

—Synonyms
1. blench, quail. Wince, recoil, shrink, quail all mean to draw back from what is dangerous, fearsome, difficult, threatening, or unpleasant. Wince suggests an involuntary contraction of the facial features triggered by pain, embarrassment, or a sense of revulsion: to wince as a needle pierces the skin; to wince at coarse language.

Because of the current wince wiki definition, I'm sure many users understood it this way:
wince: involuntary wink
wink: voluntary wink

The Japanese do draw most wince as one eye closed, but not all of them:
post #742521, post #823588, post #492044,
post #789376, post #617676, post #414325

Most of the wince posts are of sexual nature and the Japanese love to draw the women in pain during sex, so it isn't wrong for most of their wink to also count as wince.

So you can't alias to wink, and adding wink must be done manually to only those images that are actually "one eye closed". Of course, the wiki needs to be revised to clear up the confusion.

Agree on the first, but post #492557 could easily be a wince, if say the comb is stuck in her hair and is pulling on it. It's hard to be sure.

That's exactly what it seems to be. I can tell from experience that wince is exactly what your face does in this situation.
