Tag Discussion: Dog/Wolf Tail/Ears

Posted under General

I just noticed the wolf tail/ears tag, and it seems like it's mostly used where a character is distinctly known as a wolf (ie:Inubashiri_Momiji). I know that not all canini have the erect ears like Gray Wolves and German Shepherds, and there's really no difference in canini tails, so do we really need it to be seperate from dog ears/tail?

It does seem like a somewhat minimally useful tag, since practically the whole thing is Momiji plus a tiny fraction of Horo's images.

On the other hand it could just be that the tag needs to be better utilized. I'm not sure that I want to nuke it (via aliasing) just yet.

I'm against this alias. Animal ears can sometimes look alike even for different species (sometimes ears intended to be dog_ears by the artist will get tagged as cat_ears and the like). I tend to like having many different types of animal ears tags for the canonical value. If the artist says their original kemonomimi character is a wolf on Pixiv, for instance I can use the wolf_ears tag to note that. Aliasing the tag would destroy that information. So, my opinion is either leave this one alone, or implicate it instead.

I think I agree with EB about either going with an implication instead or not doing anything.

There will always be a lot of overlap between different types of animal ears, so I don't think having a lot of overlap is necessarily a good reason to outright get rid of the tag altogether.

I think I'll just go with leaving this one alone. Implicating dog_ears for every fox and wolf seems wrong to me. Though I suppose canine_ears as a dog/wolf/fox umbrella isn't completely ridiculous... I think.

I was thinking about something like that, but in the end it's really the shape and pattern that we're tagging. The problem with that is that many types of ears share similar shapes and occasionally share also similar colors... kind of screws around with things.

Some cat ears could look like a foxes ears, etc.
