I don't think it's related to pronunciation at all.
It shows word composition, e.g. 会社員 is かいしゃ-いん, and 英雄主義 is えいゆう-しゅぎ.
I'm not strictly opposed to allowing an optional '-' to help readability at points where the dictionary splits a word, but I'm not buying the diphtong reasoning.

What is being bumped? Well, I put akaneiro -> akane-iro through although it was all in the latter already.

I was not around when Sol bumped the thread, but I was thinking of doing it as well.

Proposals:

1. Let us use hyphenation in latinizations the way Zatchii put it above: "allowing an optional '-' to help readability at points where the dictionary [any high-quality dictionary] splits a word". And with honorifics, of course.

2. Aliasing aki_no_urarano_akane_iro_shouten_gai → aki_no_urara_no_akane-iro_shoutengai (unless well-grounded objections arise)

3. Aliasing akaneiro_ni_somarusaka → akane-iro_ni_somaru_saka (unless well-grounded objections arise)

I believe that even if no general consensus on punctuation is reached, no copyright should have two or more parallel tags.

Maybe just decide by voting every time there is a disagreement concerning the number of underscores and hyphens in a copytag?
