I think we had an otsukaresama tag at some point but it's empty now. Not sure how easily we can convey to users that it's referencing the text they can't read though.

Seeing an unknown tag in the tag list. They'll be looking at the tag list anyway if they look for a translation_request tag.
Besides otsukare, there's a bunch of other similar tags e.g. akeome, kotoyoro, happy birthday, hits etc. that could be thought of as "in lieu of translation" if there is no other text to translate. A tag group might not be a bad idea here, and better wiki documentation might be useful if the objective is to "let people know there's nothing to translate."
Right now, some of these wikis have sample text for visual comparison even if people can't actually read it, but I don't think it's noted anywhere that translation_request should not be applied.

Good points. otsukare is an artist tag, though.
The tag group idea is good. Let's go with that.
Bumping this in relevance to forum #38593.
Would convention greeting be a good name for the "(insert convention here) otsukaresama deshita" message pics?
Did we ever decide on this? I'm for convention_greeting, because good_job is somewhat vague and otsukaresama could be a bit obscure to those who don't know Japanese. (although we do have tags like kemonomimi_mode, tsuki_ni_kawatte_oshioki_yo, and anata_wo_hannin_desu)
