Upload rules, general guidance of new uploaders?

Posted under General

Should certain elements of upload rules be more apparent? The uploader/uploads page doesn't convey any restrictions or rules- just a "Help". The upload rules aren't on any of the uploading pages. Nothing quite suggests any guidelines from the get-go.

I think it'd be a little more useful to put some reference links on https://danbooru.donmai.us/uploads/new, just to indicate there are restrictions and rules. Such as howto:tag help:upload_rules, and some basic introductions to concepts like copyright, character, and artist tags.

git gud skill issue trial by fire figure it out via observation and mimicry

Probably a good idea. Worth noting the little "help" button on the tagging page points you to the upload rules , but it's not super obvious.

Right next to the meatball menu!

At least if we make the rules more obvious no one can blame us for them being too hard to find or whatever. Just cause no one's gonna read them doesn't mean they should be hidden :DunkekStare:

Maybe something like how twitch.tv does channel rules? New chatters are shown some bullet point rules before sending their first message and this point is used as justification for permabanning someone if they mention a prohibited topic.

Maybe a popup window similar to the commentary editing window that lists out the main points in the rules and requires someone to acknowledge them before their first upload would serve as a more straightforward response to "My upload was deleted! Help!!!". I remember being overwhelmed by uploading guide and rules when I first joined, so I'm sure some people just skip the wiki.

How about something simple like, "do not upload these things" with a "learn more" or something. Like first and foremost, AI-generated content (exception: assisted). That's been racking up deletions for 8k posts since late 2022.

New users who don't utilize the uploader's URL fetching could use a little more guidance, especially on whether we prefer they upload direct images, or input a URL. As well as which URL to use (i.e the direct image link, or a post link. Not everyone would assume the post link will work) and what sites are compatible.

Honestly I think a big one could be just making the upload page a lot more "URL-centric". Right now it seems like file upload is the default, and URL upload is the afterthought, while in reality most uploads should be URL uploads.

An 'are you sure' type popup for users with <15 uploads might be helpful when trying to do a file upload, as those users are the most likely to get it wrong. It's one thing for a more experienced user to download a file manually, use the file upload, and then fill in the URL and any commentary when the URL uploader isn't working, but it might be nice to put a barrier, even if just a button click, between new users and self-uploads.

This Dmail I just received just proves this point perfectly.

I agree. Plus, the upload form does not tell what kind of URLs are accepted - someone unfamiliar with extractors might assume that only direct image urls are allowed.
